Revised guidelines for re-issuance of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)
Government of India has revised instructions/guidelines on ‘Re-issuance of OCI cards due to Issuance of new foreign passports to OCI cardholders.’
(i)     Mandatory requirement of re-issuance of an OCI card each time a new passport is issued to a foreigner up to 20 years of age and once after completing 50 years of age is dispensed with. 
(ii)     OCI cardholder is required to get the OCI card re-issued only once when a new passport is issued after completing 20 years of age so as to capture his/her facial features.  
(iii)    OCI cardholder is required to upload ONLINE a copy of the new passport and a latest photo each time a new passport is issued up to 20 years of age and once after completing 50 years of age.  The uploading of these documents may be done within three months of receipt of the new passport.  The service will be provided on Gratis (no cost/free)  basis. 
(iv)    Foreign Spouse of an Indian Citizen or spouse of foreign origin of an OCI cardholder are required to upload a copy of the new passport and also a latest photo ONLINE each time a new passport is issued along with a declaration on subsisting of marriage, copy of the Indian passport of the Indian spouse/passport & OCI card of the OCI cardholder spouse. 
2. Necessary changes to upload documents in the OCI portal to facilitate above services to OCI cardholders will be done soon.
3.    In the meanwhile, the timeline for re-issuance of OCI card in r/o OCI cardholders who may be required to get their OCI card re-issued has been extended till 31 December, 2021. The OCI card holders travelling on the strength of their existing OCI card bearing old passport number are not required to carry their old passport. However, carrying of new passport is mandatory.


Important information: OCI card holders do not entitle to carry out research, missionary work mountaineering, tabligh and journalistic activities without prior permission.
  • It is informed that the consular appointments stand cancelled until further notice. Applications need to be sent and collected by post as visitors are not allowed in Embassy premises. Check the Postal address of the embassy before sending application. Embassy will not be responsible for any post lying at any other place than the collection point.

  • Presently there are some delays in the processing of cases, given the situation. It may take upto 7-8 weeks to get the OCI cards.

  • If you want to know if the embassy has received the application, kindly send it as REK envelope and track it on the Postnord website. If you want to know the tracking number of your dispatched post, note the REK number of your return envelope in advance and track it on the Postnord website. The REK receipt can be generated on the Postnord’s website.

TO APPLY FOR OCI CARD, PLEASE SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:

Applicants who have formerly held Indian passport or who are of Indian origin:

  • Swedish passport copy/current valid passport copy

  • If previously held an Indian passport: Photocopy of Surrender Certificate and cancelled Indian passport

  • If never have held an Indian passport: proof of your Indian origin (eg. photocopies of parents’ or grandparents’ Indian passports or OCI card, Nativity Certificate from competent authority in India and the proof of relationship thereof)

  • Two recent colour photos

  • Personbevis/Familjebevis from Skatteverket

  • A receipt of the required fee paid via bank transfer (See OCI FAQ for payment details)

Note: Documents to be uploaded on the online file are Current passport copy and Cancelled Indian passport copy of self/Indian origin proof of parent’s. Original Swedish passport or current valid passport must be shown at the embassy either at the time of submission or at the time of collection. Applicants who send their application by post and wish to receive their OCI card by post must send their original passport for verification along with a stamped returned envelope.

Note that every individual application should contain all the above documents. Read the instructions carefully on the online OCI portal before submitting the application.

Applicants who are applying based on marriage:

  • Swedish passport copy/current valid passport copy

  • Original marriage certificate/Vigselbevis with apostille or notarized stamps along with copies thereof (Please note you can only apply after two years of marriage. If you get a divorce, you must have your OCI cancelled.) Be informed that proof from Skatteverket shall not be accepted as Marriage Certificate

  • Spouse’s original Indian passport/OCI card and copies thereof

  • Two recent colour photo

  • Familjebevis from Skatteverket

  • A receipt of the required fee paid via bank transfer (See OCI FAQ for payment details)

Note: Documents to be uploaded on the online file are Current passport copy, Spouse Indian passport/OCI card copy, Notarized Marriage Certificate. Original Swedish passport or current valid passport must be shown at the embassy either at the time of submission or at the time of collection. Applicants who send their application by post and wish to receive their OCI card by post must send their original passport for verification along with a stamped returned envelope.

TO APPLY FOR OCI RENEWAL, PLEASE SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:

  • New Swedish passport copy/ current valid passport copy

  • Two colour photos

  • Old OCI card copy

  • Receipt of the payment (See OCI FAQ for payment details)

  • Personbevis if the address needs to be updated

  • Police complaint report in the case of lost OCI card

PHOTO SPECIFICATIONS FOR OCI

  • The photograph should be in color and of the size of 2 inch x 2 inch (51mmx51mm).

  • The background should be a plain white or off-white. 

  • The photo-print should be clear and with a continuous-tone quality.

  • It should have full face with shoulders visible, front-view, eyes open.

  • Photo should present full head from top of hair to bottom of chin. Center head with in frame.

  • Photo should be taken within the last 3 months to reflect your current appearance.

  • There should not be any distracting shadows on the face or on the background.

  • Head coverings are not permitted except for religious reasons, but the facial features from bottom of chin to top of forehead and both edges of the face must be clearly shown.

  • The expression on the face should look natural and neutral.

  • Non-tinted prescription glasses are allowed as long as your eyes are clearly visible.

Minor Applicants:

In case a child who cannot sign or write their name, his/her left thumb impression must be uploaded on the online file. In no case an adult signature should be uploaded. Minor applicant needs to put their thumb impression or write their name on the application (Printed) form also. This is mandatory and application would not be accepted without that.

Consular Services
